THE TIMES-UNION CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Jacksonville, Florida
The Times-Union Center for the performing Arts contains two theaters and a symphony hall. The Jim and Jan Moran Theater is a multi-use 3,200 seat theater designed as an acoustic and spatial compromise for the variety of performances that are comprised of amplified concerts and Broadway shows to the natural acoustics of the symphony.
The C. Herman & mary Virginia terry theater is a 600 seat theater in which the acoustics received minor alterations. The HVAC machinery and electronic transformers outside the theater were encapsulated and placed on floating pads to eliminates noise inside the hall.
The Robert E. Jacoby Symphony hall is a 1,800 seat concert Hall constructed to keep sound alive, to reflect, sustain and distribute non-amplified sound. Precast concrete is the structure and the actual finish. The mechanical system is high volume, low velocity with silencers. The spaces are fitted with state-of-the-art sound systems, lighting and variable acoustics. The acoustic requirement of the building envelope is mass and density to reflect sound and abate exterior noise. From roof to foundation, the concert hall is completely isolated from the existing structure to eliminate external vibration and sound transfer.
