JACKSONVILLE MUSUEM OF MODERN ART Jacksonville, Florida
The Museum’s plan for adaptive reuse of this historic building, the Western Union Telegraph building, called for renovation of the basement to include an auditorium, photography lab and classroom, a catering kitchen, workshop space, and art storage facilities.
In addition to the auditorium and facilities described above, 1) a Museum Shop, Lobby, and Cafe on the first floor, 2) a 40-foot high gallery on the mezzanine level in which large works must be displayed, 3) additional gallery space on the second and third floors for exhibiting JMOMA’s permanent collection and traveling exhibitions, 4) administrative offices on the fourth floor, and 5) art education classrooms on the fifth floor.
To continue the Museum as a central artistic focus of Jacksonville a volunteer Design Collaborative was founded as a vehicle to broaden the involvement of the design community to participate in the recreation of the Museum. The Collaborative has allowed the contribution of talents and expertise of many of Jacksonville’s talented Architects and Designers, working in collaboration on the overall design concept and each responsible for the details of a component of the Museum. KBJ Architects, Inc. is proud to have been apart of such a talented group of designers.
